hexmi

A custom typeface, loosely based on Futura Medium, which I designed in my Typography & Design course at Fordham University.

The Problem

Design a functional typeface that prioritizes legibility and clarity, loosely based on Futura Medium. The challenge was to create a typeface that is distinct enough to work at various sizes.

The Design Process

I approached this project as a system rather than individual letters, using typefaces such as Didot, IBM Plex Mono, and Futura Medium to explore possibilities. I ultimately chose Futura Medium as a starting point. Early work took a different form from the final product. Initially, the forms took on more natural, leaf shapes until further ideas were pursued. Finally landing upon the hexagonal design, the rest of the typeface quickly came to be.

Step 1: Experiment with different ideas and typefaces.

05

Step 2: Futura Medium was chosen and slick, leaf shapes were initially pursued. However, as I began the vowels a new trend began to emerge: the hexagon.

06

Step 3: Pursue a newer, better idea: the aforementioned hexagons. Originally bloated, I wanted to focus on a single aspect of the new direction instead of multiple ideas at once. Therefore, leaving the bloated nature behind while continuing to pursue the geometric design.

07

Step 4: Create a rough draft and prune the "winners" and "losers". At this stage, most letterforms had varying weights and x-heights.

08

Step 5: Align baselines and x-heights of the final product, and compare with original inspiration.
