The Problem

Design an album cover for your favorite musical artist that incorporates and builds upon their previous covers. Create an original design that draws inspiration from past designs and embraces the concept of remix culture.

The Design Process

First, I started with ideation and drew inspiration from past Daft Punk album covers and discography. My goal was to create a new album cover that pays homage to Daft Punk’s past eras while simultaneously engaging their fans in nostalgia. Then, I analyzed their past albums and found that most of them use simple yet strong imagery in the background, with a stylized logo on top.

The cover incorporates a futuristic aesthetic that aligns with EDM's nature and Daft Punk’s overall image. This album cover calls back to multiple Daft Punk albums, while simultaneously feeling retro-futuristic and nostalgic. This choice was intentional and meant to symbolize Daft Punk’s return after 13 years of inactivity. In this design, I am borrowing Daft Punk’s logotype while referencing the chrome motif of Discovery, the television static used to reference the television screen in the album cover of Human After All, and most importantly (a nod to longtime fans), the grid in the background as an homage to their Alive 2007 concert stage and also a reference to their creation of 2010’s Tron Legacy original soundtrack and score.
